Champlin sits along the Mississippi River northwest of Minneapolis. The city is named in a roundabout way after Commodore Stephen Champlin, a Navy officer who commanded a schooner at the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813. In the 1850s his daughter married a land developer who was investing in the area, and her husband named the city “Champlin” after his commodore father-in-law.
